In our very first interview in our series on ‘Selling in the 21st Century’, renowned entrepreneur Jen Groover, tackles the question often debated in board rooms, conference calls and strategy sessions.

Are sales and marketing the same thing?

A little more about Jen:

Jen Groover, has been described as a one-woman brand by Success Magazine and has built one of the fastest growing handbag companies in the world, Butler Bag. She’s been featured on Fox, ABC, NBC and countless other media publications. And, she’s done it all while raising twin daughters. She recently authored a best-selling business book ‘What If? & Why Not?’ , which is all about overcoming fears to build the business of your dreams.

In our 2 hour interview Jen shared some fantastic insights on how she’s built her brand and some nuggets of gold on behind the scenes selling strategies from her work with QVC. But we thought we’d share just a few of her thoughts on sales & marketing coming together to build a strong brand presence.

    As a head of sales for a tech company, I’d love to see the marketing department become more accountable for the stuff they produce.

    Too often they come up with material, that doesn’t have anything to do with what our clients are thinking or even care about.

    I’d love to see them squirm under a quota like salespeople have to…

    Interested to see what other people you interviewed have to say… Jen seems pretty sharp.

    Great point from Jen Groover on creating collaboration between different departments or center of excellence. Collaboration is a key skill companies – including agencies – of today and tomorrow will have to learn. I believe it will need the active set up of an organisation and culture of collaboration.
